pplied Program:Organizational Behavior

I am interested in the field of study of Organizational Behavior. In thepast, I have had the experience of working in settings where the people and thecorporate cultures of the companies were all different. I have found that thereis a great difference in the both the behaviors of people and of theirorganizations, depending on whether they are state-owned enterprises (SOEs),large multinational firms, or small to medium sized foreign enterprises. Onesimple example is that of the ability of an employee to act independentlywithout direct instructions from his or her boss. In many Chinese organizations, acting without direct instructions is considered a form of disrespect towardsthe supervisor, who is generally offended by such behavior. In my experience andresearch, such organizations tend to have low operating efficiency with theemployees losing their innate ability to take the initiative.

In contrast, foreign enterprises tend to welcome employees who have theability to make decisions on their own, though the extent to which this is truedepends on whether the supervisor is a local Chinese or an expatriate. Theseorganizat Applied Program:Organizational Behavior

The purpose behind this personal statement is to not only gain admission toyour well-established and highly respected Ph.D. program, but to impress uponyou my passion for learning and my tremendous desire to succeed in bothscholastic research and in teaching on the professional level. I have based mydecision to pursue an academic career not on purely practical reasons, butrather on my own natural interests and aptitude. My personal philosophy is thatmoney and social status should not be pursued as life-consuming objectives andthat in actuality they are the by-products of goals originating from one's innerneeds. I understand that my intellectual capacity is a gift, and I intend to usethis gift to the very best of my substantial capabilities.

I am a person keen on thinking and experiencing. My lively character andvigorous energy have made me very active in extracurricular events in which Ihave sought an all-round personal development. Sociology Studies will provide mewith the kind of constant real life thinking I have always craved, while helpingme to improve my analytical, practical & communication skills. Also myconcern and curiosity about society and its people inspired me to pursue thissubject for my higher education, as I believe Sociology Studies sums up a lot inthe changing nature of society.

My education has schooling my perception of society and people leading meto be acutely aware of social events, inequality, identities, cultures andreligious fundamentalism, especially in a society such as the one I come from -China. I was practicing in the Chinese Hope Project during summer holidays andvolunteered to investigate the issue of low educational attendance rate forfemale students in rural China with my tutor from my high school and that was avery good experience as it not only made me realise how traditional culturalinfluence could remain unchanged in some of those rural areas in China and alsothe way parents and children interacting. I always have wondered why for manyChinese students just like me, hundreds of them fail to choose what they reallywant to student and do as a career. Chinese parents are definitely havingstrange influences on their kids' decision making in terms of education andcareer or in the worst cases; the parents decided what their kids should dosolely. My mother believes that I should go for Finance studies, while I clearlyknow that my interest has never been in the Mathematical formulas and numbers, Ialways find the diversities of societies, people, beliefs, cultures and the waypeople interacting together very fascinating. So, during this summer, mythoughts kept returning on why I worked so unsuccessfully towards studyingfinance and economics as my mother expected? And how can I truly become my ownmaster by progressing a BA that I really like to engage more research and enrichmyself with? How did all the cultural and beliefs affecting the way we actingthe roles in the community? In which way an individual could actually build upand refine his/her identities?

In pursuing a Sociology degree, I seek answers to these questions. Athorough examination of the Sociology behind human behaves could reveal thebeliefs, values and identities; it enables us to exam and understand ourselvesbetter. While knowledge of Sociology will certainly benefit the social servicesproviding, I also maintain a passion for Culture Studies for that same ural behaviour study appeals to me because it tells us why we act in acertain way - under a cultural atmosphere. Also for being in the UK for 3 years, the knowledge about the outside world has given me a unique and balancedperspective to examine the reality of Chinese society too. In this historicalepoch in which China is becoming closely integrated into the internationalcommunity and playing an influence role in the world arena, I wish to gaininsights into our society in its socio-culture aspects and to study how Chineseculture can respond to the globalization process.

By combining these thoughts into a good BA in Sociology degree programme, Ican pursue my professional goal of doing education and community service workfor the government and perhaps focusing in promote public welfare. My experiencein the past in social practices has not only equipped me with an intellectualfoundation for my future studies but has also supplied me with my career my eyes, China's several thousand years of history has given rise to thedeep-entrenched rule by man instead of rule by law and nature. In dealing withsuch issues like economic development, poverty elimination and the promotion oflaw, the framing and application of government policies seem to play a greaterrole. Therefore, it is obvious that to contribute to public welfare and tonational development, it is more realistic and useful to become a well-trainedand well-qualified public administrator. In this lies the motivation of myapplication for an undergraduate programme in sociology at your esteemeddepartment.

WanSheng High School where I was studying is a key provincial high schoolthat attracts best students from every part of the province. In fierce academiccompetitions, I have managed to remain top-ten in my high school academicperformance and was recommended by the school to Highbury College,Portsmouth tostudy my foundation course. I passed the foundation course successfully in 20__and was an outstanding student of my class. I believe that my previous socialpractices activities and academic preparations have built a solid background forme to further my intensive and fruitful research in your BA in Sociologystudies. After gaining knowledge of both Sociology and different cultures at thehighly regarded University of Leicester, I plan to work for social services touse my knowledge of social human behaviour to aid members of the public.

Born in Beijing, China’s political capital, cultural center and economichub, and nurtured in a well-cultured family and an empowering community, I havedeveloped a meaningful outlook on lie. I identify myself with such values thatone gives meaning to life when one lives to give. Success stories of my parents, relatives and friends along their career-path have entrenched my belief inbeing independent and confident as a contributing memeber of the community.

As I look back on early days of my schooling , I am just as grateful to myworking parents for having sent me to one of the best boarding schools inBeijing where I received quality primary education and learned to appreciateindependence. As I recall , being independent was probably the biggest asset Igained as a teenager with the absence of parental guardianship for most of those6 years. After I upgraded to secondary school, I offered to go to school bybike. Though hesitant at first, my parents gave their well-thought-out consentto the 15-km ride average Chinese parents would simply veto in the first placegiven the “one-child policy”and subsequent “little emperors” pampered by parentsand grandparents. Thankfully, that day-to-day routine bike trip, rain orsunshine, tempered my strong character. I have been holding myself to higheststandards, academically and physically from primary school days through tocollege life. I have grown up all these years amongst top cohorts and have beenexposed to varied horizons and dimensions of school life in and outside ofclassroom. I am perfectly healthy and stong with a sharp mind and demonstratedcommitment to teamwork. I was handpicked to play for school baseball team when Iwas in primary school. Back then, my proven leadership and excellent skills inthe field assured my coach that I was born to be a team leader. And I didjustice to his well-timed appointment by heading a team of Beijing to compete inShanghai and Hong Kong several times. And the strong track record of outoutstanding performances each time still fills me with pride and excitementtoday. During one match tour to Hong Kong in the 1990s, I was immediatel exposedto the enviable luxury and prosperity of the city, the dynamic economic center ofAsia. That trip awakened me ,for the first time, to the value of wealth andfinance. And it was that very journey to the thriving metropolis that shaped myambition to be a financer.

Years later, when the colleg entrance exam came, that moment of life anddeath for most of senior high school students in China,my top preference wasFinance Colllege of Beijing Technology and Business Unversity. The result cameas a sad surprise as I was admitted to Computer Science College instead. But Istuck with my dream major and decided to minor in finance. I have since workedhard to equip myself with systematic knowledge of finance. As a result , I amdnow well on my way to graduation with double degrees in both computer scienceand finance in 20__.

During my college days,I led my cohorts in starting up a micro company as Idabbled into the real business world. We settled for newspaper as our maidenattempt.. As a new horn,I took a hands-on approach, from editing to circulating, from cost control to market survey. My strong leadership and sunergy of theentire team kept this mini organization going pretty well in its infancy. Yetinexperience in operation and cost management led to a failed business in theend. But I saw the silver lining in the failed venture. I now know more aboutwhere I need to work on. When I was a little boy, my parents taught me how tomanage money in the safest way. They helped me put my pocket money in the bankand get interest as a return. Now, as a grown-up already,I recognize thatsystematic learning and book knowledge can truely help me know how much moreabout what finance is all about. Naturally, as one’s knowledge about swimmingincreases, the desire to swim in the sea grows. Yet, with more academicexposure, I have come to realize how I am ill-equipped with the knowledge neededto stay afloat in the trubulent sea of finance. That self-conscious humblenessversus the profundiy of finance as a much-respected discipline has led me to optfor further study in the US,home to a number of world-class colleges offinance.

After meticulous comparision and cross-checking, I have settled for ClarkUniversity, the birthplace of the first-ever graduate school in the US. I trustthat demanding academic standards here and ,best of all ,great mastermind offinance that Clark can offer will undoubtedly broaden my horizon and update myvision as financier of the future. To me,Clark is the best and right place thatcan surely make the difference, academically and professionally alike. I am morethan anxious to embrace those best minds in Clark and contribute my humble partto its huge wealth of knowledge and innovative ideas. I am therefore very muchlooking forward to a positive reply from Clark, my dream campus. May that offercome just in time for my journey towards a rewading learning experience in oneof the greatest colleges in the US.

Dear _,

“Life is Like a Box of Chocolates. You Never Know What You are Going toGet”. Such words come from a famous movie “Forrest Gump”. I don’t know what kindof chocolate life will give me, but I believe I can achieve my target if I workhard with my unwavering belief and persevering efforts like Forrest Gump. As astudent of Mechanical Engineering, I have just finished my undergraduate studysince July. Next what I have to face is to choose the new chocolate which I haveyearned for all long. With four-year study of M.E. in China, I would like toscale higher intellectual heights by undertaking advanced studies in __University, as I believe its rich learning environment and free academicatmosphere will open my eyes to new realities and influence me to confront thesituation back home.

My strong interest in research was born during the undergraduate years at_University. Upon entering the university in 20__, I began to embark on myjourney of industrious study in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Myexceptionally solid foundation in mathematics and physics provided me with astepping stone with which I proceeded onto the exploration of othersophisticated and erudite subjects. My performance in all the specialty-relatedcoursework not only enabled me to secure good GPA ranking me about top 17 in mygrade among 169 students but also furnished me with a powerful instrumentwhereby to materialize my dreams in the research. I constantly congratulated myluck to obtain a lot of scholarships and awards, due to my academic achievement, from the university, especially the scholarship of “_University – AmericanUnited Technological Corporation”, awarded only for the best students who areboth good at academic and social capacity. Not contented with doing a good jobin mere coursework, I endeavored to keep abreast with the latest theories andtechnologies by reading extensively technical literature in recent journals andattending the lecture some famous professors made. During my undergraduatecareer, I have grasped every chance to do some researching work. I used toparticipate in at least six projects including the intern work in the factory, mechanical designs and graduate design.

Especially during the period from September to November of 20__, I readmany books and journals in the field of mechanical engineering such as “Handbookof Practical Gear Design” (Written by __). In these books, I did intensivereading on the theory of the speed reducer. I investigated and discussed with myteacher on how to apply the theory into the practice. Then according to myteacher’s advice, I tried to organize a team consisting of five members to makea harmonic gear reducer. As a team leader, I should not only take charge of thewhole arrangement of project but also make every member of the team cooperatewith each other harmoniously. Before starting the program, I, together with myteam, made a detailed plan covering the schedule, materials, and equipment. Thefirst step of our work is the design of the reducer. The design plan is asfollows: (1) Set down the blue print. (2) Complete 3-D solid model with Pro/Esoftware. (3) Finite-element analysis with ANSYS software. (4) Assemblingsimulation by using Pro/E. (5) Complete the 2-D draft of part and r two-week design work, we stepped to the next work, manufacture of theproduct. With the aid of the technique of computer, we plan the manufacturingprocess of every part. And then, all parts were made with various machine toolssuch as CNC lathe, wire electrical discharge machine, vertical machining center, and so on. Finally, we had toassembly all parts to the harmonic gear reducer, and test-drove it for many times. With five-week unremitting efforts, wesucceeded in the project of harmonic gear reducer and obtained the highestpraise. This special experience makes it very helpful for my further tly, I find the connection between theory and practice. Textbooks couldhardly cover everything, therefore, if we want to learn more, we should pursueevery opportunity to have practices. Meanwhile, I experienced the importance andmightiness of cooperation. In the project, we divided ourselves into severalparts, not only doing one’s own work well, but also cooperating with each otherharmoniously.

Another case worthy mentioning is my design project for graduation,“Manufacturing and Performance of Electroplated CBN Tools”. The main objectiveof this project is the manufacturing of the electroplated CBN (Cubic BoronNitride) wheels and the research of its performance when grinding theheat-resisted steel. I had completed three steps of task. Firstly, I took chargeof the manufacturing of electroplated CBN wheels, covering the following work:selecting electroplating solution, computing various electroplating parameterssuch as electrical current and temperature, adhering CBN to the tool base byelectroplating a nickel layer. After these basic preparations, I had to do thesecond part of the research work to compare grinding abilities of electroplatedCBN wheels with those of other wheels such as SiC wheels, Al2O3 wheels etc. Thispart of the work needs the researcher’s highly particularity and staidness. Idid the detailed work as follows: (1) Grind heat-resisted steel with variouswheels in the same grinding conditions. (2) Record data and compute the grindingratio of various wheels. (3) Measure the surface roughness of the heat-resistedsteel ground by various wheels. (4) Observe dulling and pullout of abrasivegrains of various wheels by using optical microscope. In this part, we canconclude that electroplated wheels have far better grinding abilities than otherwheels, by comparing parameters, such as grinding ratio, surface roughness final assignment of the project is to find out the most suitable parametersof grinding heat-resisted steel with electroplated CBN wheels, through comparingthe grinding ratio and surface roughness of heat-resisted steel ground indifferent grinding parameters. By investigating the attributes of electroplatedCBN wheels and concluding their practical grinding parameters, this project isvery important in promoting the application of them.

China’s unique advantage of labor force predicts the resplendent future ofits Mechanical Engineering, especially the manufacture, and it is our beliefthat this day will come soon. On the other hand, there are so many experiencedtechnicians in China, however, with the absence of advanced experts manyadvanced producing method cannot be used in practical yield. When I worked asintern in some factories, I found that most of them were still using facilitieswhich were used in America about thirty years ago. Therefore I want to use theadvanced knowledge earned in United States, combined with my acquaintance withChina, to improve the present situation and apply best the advanced scientifictechnology to practical social wealth as soon as possible. I hope to become asuccessful researcher in Mechanical Engineering, the arduous but exhilarativefield. The significant progress achieved in M.E, with the extraordinary culturaland intellectual sources in your university, has attracted me greatly. Based onthe study and the research experience in _ University, I am sure that I amqualified and would be an outstanding Ph.D. student. With the advanced courses, balanced program and distinguished faculty of your department, I would get asolid background for my future academic career.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

It is my conviction that the meaning of life does not dwell in the lengthof time that one can live or the material abundance that one can acquire, but inthe richness and the wonderfulness of life itself. With the increase of my age, many things in my life have changed. But one thing remains constant, that is, Iwill consistently insist on doing what I like to do and hope that my endeavorscan be valuable to the life of others. I see this as the only way whereby I canrealize the value of my life.

My undergraduate study focused on economics and I achieved remarkablescholastic performance in this field. My GPA is 3.44 (my GRE score is 20__ andTOEFL---- ). For four consecutive years of my undergraduate study, I receivedscholarships for my distinguished academic performance. Due to my equallyprominent performance in extracurricular activities I was conferred on theOutstanding Student in Campus Activities. However, honestly speaking, my realinterest lies not in economics, but in education. Ever since I was a primaryschool student, I had cherished a strong desire for a teaching careerexemplified by my teachers. In the actual teaching career that I embarked onupon my graduating from university, I have become increasingly aware that theexisting educational conditions in China are far from satisfactory. The backwardteaching methodology and the prevailing pedagogical ideology have renderedChinese education out of place with the modern international development ineducation. On the macro level, the current education theory and practice inChina lag significantly behind advanced countries in the West. For instance, though education via the internet has achieved considerable development in pasttwo years, in practical operation such education has more often than notdeteriorated into an extended form of the conventional examination-orientededucation instead of a really interactive process. In my personal experience, despite the fact that some of the problems that I have encountered in myteaching career can be solved by consulting relevant technical literature, Ihave found that the more serious flaws inherent in China's current educationalsystem cannot be worked out easily. Under such circumstances, an advancedprogram in education becomes necessary.

In this age of information, traditional education, both in its ideology andmethodology, has met unprecedented challenge like many other aspects of humanexistence. Meanwhile, the pursuit for higher levels of educational developmentand of the quality of life has largely transformed the educational valueorientation of the general public. The educational model that is centered aroundthe cognitive and intellectual instruction has been seriously ter attention has been devoted to the cultivation of well-developedpersonality and to the ontological status of the individual in education. Suchissues as the internal studies of education science, scientific decision-makingin education, and meta-education have also been increasingly emphasized e have also been innovations in educational research methodology. Thetendency has been to combine modern technology with humanistic researchcategories and with naturalistic research categories, and to organicallyintegrate qualitative descriptions with quantitative descriptions. It is alsoimportant to carry out educational experimentations in which educationalpredictions are complemented by educational feedbacks. Both the complexity ofeducation and the complexity of human individuals have made the comprehensiveapplication of diverse educational approaches necessary. Those new horizons arewhat fascinate me.

In view of the following qualifications that I have acquired, I believethat I will acquit myself satisfactorily in the prospective Ph.D. program ineducation that I am currently endeavoring to apply for. First and foremost, asis often claimed, one's interest is one's best director. I believe that I willdo well what I am really interested in doing. Secondly, though I majored ineconomics as an undergraduate, my trainings during that stage helped developeffective modes of thinking and research approaches. In addition, Iconscientiously self-studied many works related to education, including ADevelopmental History of Educational Science in the West, which enabled me toconstruct a solid groundwork for more advanced studies in this field. Next, itcan be safely asserted that education and economics are not entirely example, it is necessary to apply many statistical methods in educationalpsychology and my academic record indicates that statistics is the subject thatI am most good at. Last but not the least, my current teaching career and myteaching experience will play a positive role in facilitating my target degreeprogram.

The reason why I apply for the University of -- is that it is the firststate university with a time-honored history. The School of Education in thisuniversity is quite prominent among its counterparts in the field. I amparticularly attracted by the School's powerful pedagogical resource, vibrantintellectual atmosphere and a comprehensive curriculum. I plan to apply for adegree program in Instructional Technology or Educational Psychology, both ofwhich enjoy unparalleled academic reputation in the world. My application forInstructional Technology is motivated by my strong interest in the applicationof modern science and technology, especially the information technologyrepresented by the Internet, in the field of education and in the nature of aseries of revolutionary changes resulting thereof. Instructional Technology is anew discipline that has emerged as a result of the rapid development of moderncommunication technology since the late 20th century. It has tremendouspotential for development and commercial application. As for my motive inselecting Educational Psychology as another possible area of specialization inmy degree program, it is my long-cherished interest that primarily counts. Onthe other hand, all the accomplished educators since the 1960's have beenwell-versed in psychology. Almost every important new educational theory isderived psychological findings in one way or another so that educationalpsychology has subsequently developed into a fundamental subject for the scienceof education. The tendency in the 21st century is to emphasize on the microresearch of educational activities and against this backdrop educationalpsychology will be attached greater importance. In Instructional Technology, Iwould like to focus on the following studies: how to improve educationalefficiency by applying research results from natural sciences and engineeringtechnology; how to explore the combination and coordination of pedagogicalcontents and to improve teaching methodology by exploiting the theoreticalfindings from psychology and educational science concerning the process ofteaching and learning. In Educational Psychology, I will concentrate on appliedcognition and development, gifted and creative education, genetics and childrendevelopment, personality structure and individual differences and other relatedsubjects.

For me, to shift from economics to education and to pursue an advanceddegree in the United States is not so much a challenge as an opportunity. Atpresent, major reforms are being introduced into virtually every importantaspect of Chinese society. The field of education especially calls forcomprehensive reforms. The United States occupies an absolutely leading positionin the present-day world in education. It is my conviction that, in the UnitedStates, advanced educational theories, technologies and information willfacilitate me immensely in the achievement of remarkable academic progress, fulfilling my aspiration to become an accomplished professional in the field ofeducation. This will not only bring my patriotic fervor into reality but alsomake my life more meaningful and rewarding.

Yours sincerely,

Dear _,

My name is Lin Hao, from Northeast China---Heilongjiang Province. Thelong-term and cold climate has allowed me to develop a tough and tenaciouscharacter in the course of my life. In 20 years, I was admitted to China withexcellent results. Jilin University, a prestigious university, is currentlystudying for a bachelor's degree in economics majoring in internationaleconomics and trade, and a second degree in futures investment and managementmajor in the same period. My university is a comprehensive university with avery complete range of disciplines. My university life has not only enabled meto develop a comprehensive and three-dimensional development in learning methodsand professional knowledge, but more importantly, it has improved my ability tointegrate knowledge of various disciplines. At the same time, it greatlyincreased my desire for knowledge. Therefore, I decided to study in the UK aftergraduation. Through understanding, I currently hope to apply for a__University__ major.

Family is very important to everyone, because it is the first classroom forus to receive education. My grandfather was a banker, my father was abusinessman, and my mother was a statistician. Their words and deeds to meplayed an extremely important role in the establishment and development of myoutlook on life and values, and also helped me. Established an honest, hardworking, and never-say-fail character. So influenced by them, I am veryinterested in finance disciplines. My family is the most important asset in mylife. It gives me the interest in learning this subject and the character ofgoing forward courageously.

Through the learning of professional knowledge, I have developed a stronginterest in economics and finance. I read "Life Economics" by Dr. DavidFriedman. In the book, he used easy-to-understand cases. Combining the mistyprinciples of economics with people’s ordinary life has enabled me to master theeconomic principles that most people find boring, and the learning methods inreal life. At the same time, I have a good understanding of Fried Dr. Mandeveloped a feeling of worship. In the same year, I read his masterpiece "PriceTheory" again. Through the study of this book, I became obsessed with knowledgeof currency and finance. Due to the strong desire for knowledge, I started tominor in the second degree "Futures Investment and Management". During thisperiod, I met a mentor, Professor Lu, a very famous scholar in China's futuresindustry. Professor Lu combines the theory and practice of the futures market, and combines the true meaning of life with the operation of the futures market, which is regarded as a "casino" by outsiders, and teaches us the knowledge ofthe futures market and economic investment. This teaching method is in line withmy learning habits, so I quickly entered the state. We often discuss thedevelopment of China’s futures industry and the price fluctuations of the worldfutures market together. In the autumn of 20__, I was invited to assist him incompleting the "China Financial Futures" Research work on the "Enlightenment ofthe Japanese Yen Development Route to the Development of China's Renminbi" inthe "Market Establishment" project. Because of his outstanding performance, hewon the appreciation of Professor Lu.

In addition to studying professional knowledge, in my spare time, I alsoestablished the first leukemia volunteer organization in Jilin Province andserved as the chairman. Helped 10 children with leukemia from poor families inthe form of voluntary activities. Every year, they held lectures on leukemiaknowledge at Jilin University, as well as volunteer registration activities forthe Chinese bone marrow bank (Chinese hematopoietic stem cell bank), and bloodsample extraction activities.

Dear _,

On November 9, 20__, I took my GRE Subject (BIOLOGY) test. Although I it isbeyond me to report the exact number of the participants in this specific testthe world over, the score I achieved indicated to me that I was above 98%, andaccording to the analysis by my classmates, this might be the highest score thatChinese students have ever achieved. While I was aware that the importance ofany test score as an indicator of one’s scholastic aptitudes should never beover-exaggerated, the result still gave me a tremendous sense of self-pride andself-achievement. I believe that I achieved such a high score not through merecoincidence. Instead, it is the result of my long-time love for and dedicatedefforts at biology. With an implicit faith in my knowledge of biology and in mypotential to continue to excel others, I here solemnly file this document in anattempt to apply for admission into your esteemed university for a Master’sprogram in pharmacology.

I am confident in my qualifications as a competitive applicant for yourhighly respected program, partially because of my unusual interest inpharmacology. As a bridge across medical science and pharmacy, pharmacologyplays a vital role in the research on the ways to resist diseases. Theexploration and the subsequent elaboration on the mechanism of therapeuticfunctioning of drugs is a necessary step in the development and application ofdrugs to overcome diseases. Faced with this academic discipline that isinextricably connected with human life and human welfare, I have always beenfascinated by this subject, bent on making my own contributions to theimprovement of the quality of human life. Every time I learn about new theories, approaches and developments in biology and pharmacology, I cannot help feelingexcited. Each setback I encounter or each success I achieve in my experimentswould motivate me to persist and continue. It is this fascination with biologyand pharmacology that stands behind my dedicated studies and research in thosesubjects.

The 4-year comprehensive and systematic study and training in the specialtyof pharmacy guaranteed my successful completion of my undergraduate program atthe College of Medicine of _ University, the best medical institute in an academic environmental famous for its rigorousness, I established a solidfoundation in such diverse fields as biology, chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacology, pathology, physiology, and cell biology. As I approached mystudies primarily from a problem-oriented manner, devoting much more energy tolabwork than to coursework in order to satisfy my curiosity for solvingpractical problems, my overall GPA is somehow affected, slightly lower than whatI would have desired. In my case, GPA, which is purely based on exam scores, does not account much. In retrospect, I have been more concerned with developingmy hands-on abilities and on developing an extensive knowledge rather than onintensive test-oriented knowledge. Nevertheless, compared with other students, Iam sure that I excel them in terms of experimental skills and the ken ofknowledge and, for an undergraduate, a good foundation supported bycomprehensive specialized knowledge and strong hands-on abilities are mostimportant for more intensive studies in the future.

I have every reason to believe that my excellent experimental skills andresearch experience will qualify me to be a helpful research assistant to myfuture supervisor and to make important research achievements. Even when I was afreshman, I started to work as a research assistant in the laboratory. Over thepast four years, I have commanded most of the basic skills necessary forundertaking lab research, such as operations on animals, cell culture, electrophoresis experiments, etc. By far, my most important research experiencecame from undertaking my graduation project, which exemplified an overall testof experimental techniques. I chose to focus on the Effect of Ye3 on the CellApoptosis. The reason for choosing this subject of research is that the study ofcell apoptosis has a crucial importance in the treatment of cancer and inmaintaining the immunity of those suffering from AIDS. On the premise that rareearth ions are considered capable of entering cells, I decided that my projectwould concentrate on rare earth ions and their effects on cell nucleus. Withextensive experiments, I discovered that, under different circumstances, rareearth ions would produce totally different behavior toward cell apoptosis. Whenthe concentration of rare earth ions is below a certain ultimate limit, thefunction of the ions changes from that of facilitating cell apoptosis to that ofsuppressing cell apoptosis. As an initial and tentative study, my research haswon very positive comments from my advisor. In undertaking a large quantity ofexperiments, I not only applied basic operation skills with much dexterity butalso acquired many new techniques such as making post-coloring observation ofthe morphology of cell nucleus through the confocal fluorescence microscope, andperforming qualitative testing of cell apoptosis with the help of flow cytometrymethod (FCM).

Having completed my undergraduate education and acquired necessaryqualifications, I would like to pursue a more advanced degree program at TheDepartment of Pharmacology & Therapeutics, Faculty of Medicine at TheUniversity of _. The department, founded in the 1950’s, has been greatlystrengthened by the joining of dozens of renowned scholars and specialists overeach of the past decade. Its mission, “to educate, create and sustain knowledgeconcerning the actions and mechanisms of drugs in biology and medicine,"reflects the Department’s consistent dedication to academic excellence. YourDepartment fosters research collaborations within the Department as well as withother _ Faculties & Departments, national and international universitiesand related industries, and is committed to the development of new researchareas. I am especially interested in Clinical Pharmacology Research Organization(CPRO) under the leadership of Dr. _.

Your research-oriented program adheres to an “apprenticeship” model ofgraduate training in which in which graduate students work in closecollaboration with a particular Faculty member, their supervisor. Since thematching of research and professional interests between the student and aFaculty member within the Department is paramount, I would like to identify Dr._ and Dr. X_as either instructor or supervisor with whom I would like to workwith. Dr. X_may enlighten me on central nervous system physiology andpharmacology while Dr. X_may instruct me concerning the mechanisms of actionand resistance and intracellular pharmacokinetics of antiviral agents. Myinitial study of their papers and research reveals that their fields of researchperfectly parallel my study and research interests. I expect that my Master’sprogram can ultimately lead to a Ph. D. program.

This Personal Statement is presented by a highly self-motivated Chineseyoung man who cherishes high academic ambitions, possesses outstanding biologyknowledge, and is determined to work harder to make even more proudachievements. For this reason, I hope that my application can be given mostserious consideration.

Yours sincerely,

Since I was young I have always had a keen interest in the way that thethings around me work. From marvelling at the telephone to how planes can fly, engineering advances have never failed to captivate me. For this reason, I havealways tried to find out how such things function, and about how they have hadan impact on the society we live in today. Coupled with the fact that I havealways enjoyed the logical and problem-solving processes involved in maths andphysics, I decided several years ago to embark on a career in engineering.

Since then, I have endeavoured to find out as much about engineering aspossible. I researched the great engineers such as Brunel, and discovered thegreat works they had completed. I have attended several engineering conferences, the most recent of which I was selected to speak live on radio about myexperiences. And once I had completed several weeks' worth of work experience, Iwas assured that it was the career that I wanted to pursue.

This summer, I took part in the Nuffield Bursary scheme for a month, working in a team, at Aerogistics Ltd. Our project was to analyse and implementa new system for the distribution of consumable materials to the individualdepartments within the company. We found the current system to be highlyinefficient and after much data gathering and thought, presented our findings tothe senior managers of the company who agreed with our ideas. The last week wasspent starting the implementation of these ideas. I found the experience to behighly challenging, yet rewarding especially as it led to me gaining a GoldCrest Award. I also found it useful as I got to see engineers at work and thedaily problems that they face. I learnt that there is a lot more to being a goodengineer than possessing technical competence, although this is undoubtedlyimportant; team work, communication and leadership skills are vital as well.

I have also recently been selected to complete two placements with armyengineers. One of these placements will focus on the more practical side ofengineering while the other will focus on the skills needed by a professionalengineer focussing on project planning and leadership. I hope to find theexperience useful.

In my spare time I like to play sport and music. In secondary school I wascaptain for the Netball and Football teams, as well as taking part in variousother sports. The experience of this greatly improved my team working abilitiesas well as my fitness. As a keen musician I am working towards my grade 5 theoryand grade 7 practical on cello. I am a member of a Youth Orchestra, and havejust recently completed a tour of Italy. I am also in the school orchestra andhave led several orchestras in the past, before progressing to the LYO.

In school, I am Deputy Head Girl, helping to lead a team of over 40prefects. I find this to be a challenging and stimulating role and believe ithas developed my confidence immensely. As well as carrying out the normal dutiesof a prefect, such as supervising younger students, I must lead and manage theother prefects. My role involves arranging rotas, organising after school eventssuch as the Year 7 social and parent's evenings and public speaking as well asother responsibilities, which have developed my communication, organisation andleadership skills immensely. The role requires a lot of commitment, but it hashelped to improve my time management, as I try to strike a balance between itand school work, which is my main priority. I have also been selected to competein the Physics Olympiad and have been entered for the Biology AdvancedExtension.

During my time at university I hope to gain a good degree, which will standme in good stead for when I enter the world of work. I would like to continue myeducation in a place where I can thrive both academically and socially, andwhere I can put my determination and motivation into good use. Thank you.
